Funds Available for Forest Management

WATERBURY-The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) has announced the availability of limited funding for cost-share programs for Vermont woodland owners for 2005. The funds come from the Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP), a federal program administered by FPR.

"Forest Land Enhancement funds can help landowners write management plans for their woodlands, start timber stand improvement, begin to control invasive plants or work on forest health issues," said Steven Sinclair, Vermont State Forester. "FLEP shares the cost to help forest landowners to accomplish important management activities on their land."

FLEP funding is always limited, and this year is no exception. Sign-up for priority practices through the first week of April. Forest landowners should call their county forester to apply. Contact information is:

Landowners who are interested in funding for forest practices related to wildlife such as restoration of riparian corridors, early successional habitat restoration or improvements for sensitive species habitats are urged to contact the federal Natural Resource Conservation Service to inquire about funds through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP).
