Tips for Developing Successful TLC Grant Applications - PDF

Since 1991, Vermont's Urban and Community Forestry Program has provided over $965,000 in competitive grants to municipalities and volunteer organizations across Vermont. This year up to $30,000 will be made available. Every year a wide variety of projects are funded including urban forestry management plans, shade tree inventories, tree maintenance and tree plantings. Communities often begin with a shade tree inventory, urban forestry management plan or streetscape design. The program has a long tradition of promoting communities invest the time in planning before planting. This grant may be all your community needs to start or revitalize a community forestry program.

Purpose
TLC Grants provide funds to communities for the purpose of developing and implementing local urban and community forestry programs.

Who’s Eligible
Grants may be awarded to municipalities, community tree boards, local volunteer organizations, educational institutions, civic groups and approved nonprofit organizations.

Timetable
Applications must be postmarked or emailed by March 28, 2008. Applicants will be notified of funding approval by May,2008. Money will be available for projects in the spring of 2008. Projects must be completed by June 30, 2009.

Planning Grants — up to $4000
Planning grants can be used for urban forestry master plans, shade tree inventories, streetscape designs, forest resource planning, or management plans for town forests. We encourage all first time grant applicants to begin with a planning grant.

Education Grants — up to $4000
Education grants can be used to develop educational programs or materials, provide information or training, or promote public awareness of urban forestry.

Planting Grants — up to $4000
Planting grants are for communities with on-going urban and community forestry programs and a site-specific planting plan, or those who are attempting to follow-up on a previous planning grant are eligible. Funds can be used for the purchase and planting of trees. All trees will require a three year maintenance guarantee on survival.

Maintenance Grants — up to $4,000

Maintenance Grants are for communities with on-going urban and community forestry programs. Funds can be used for pruning, cabling, fertilizing, etc. Tree removal is not eligible.

Mini Grants — up to $200
Mini grants are seed money for communities and organizations for training, reference material, single tree purchases and Arbor Day activities. Local match is not required.
